at three, he is old enough to know better, and to be reprimanded. if he tried to touch the tree, he should be told No. just to be safe, and keep him away from the tree. i doubt he would try to eat the lights, but a bigger concern is for him to grab the branches and pull, and if its not anchored down, it could topple over on him. so its just safer for children not to be allowed to touch the tree. good luck!

I work with preschool children everyday and I have never heard of a 3 year old eating the lights. If you have a problem with him eating or putting things in his mouth, maybe you need to get an OT eval. He may have sensory issues that need to be addressed.

kids put a lot of stuff in their mouths when they are small, even at 3. make sure that you can supervise the tree when the lights are on and anchor it to something so the little guy won't be able to pull the tree down and get hurt. don't use small ornaments which he could swallow. perhaps some colourful candy which could distract him, especially if he knows that those taste even better than christmas lights. make sure that you put the edible stuff on a lower level, so he can't pull the tree down when he's trying to get them. the candy stuff works for sure, it's been tried and tested with my little cousins. good luck!

I'm going to have to agree with what pretty much everyone else is telling you.. Three is a little too old to still be doing that.. You need to find the best way to teach them that they're not supposed to eat that stuff!!! A smack on the hand or butt is always helpful!! Good luck

you shoudl be ok.... most of all they will just look in wonder. My 2 year old is a kid that puts everything in his mouth, and he touches everything, but last year, around the tree he was amazing. he didnt fiddle with it much at all... and atleast you can reason with a 3 year old better than a 1 year old. i wouldnt worry too much. they will love the twinkle and the magic!

We're not exactally psychic but as long as the lights are fastened tightly and you cover the cord at the socket you should be ok.

typically by age 3 children can be expected to know what they can and cannot eat. they also understand the concept of no and that there are consequences for bad choices and poor listening.

go ahead and decorate. you'll be fine!

No. We told our daughter at that age that the lights were "hot", which she understood very well!
