Why are they allowed to charge daily if you dont have car insurance? I live in NY and I moved here from Detroit and in Det. if you dont have insurance they dont charge you daily, you just have to get insurance on your car or you'll get a ticket. Here in NY they do both. How and why is this legal?

Dealing with the DMV is a State to State thing. I'd hazard a guess and say since New York is more populated the Insurance Industry has to get tougher and Motorists, Driving around with No Insurance on your Vehicle can cause mega problems for all parties concerned.

Anything is legal if the state congress has approved it, it is not against the constitution, and the courts have not ruled against it. Driving is a privilege, not a right. The charge is probably to offset any damage you may do while you don't have insurance. In California you can't even get a license without insurance.

The laws are different in New York. However, in every one of the US states and territories insurance is required if you have a vehicle, so why is it a question? Just get insurance, be in compliance with the law and you won't have to worry about in any state.

I beleive that they charge here in MD as well. Isn't that incentive enough to get insurance. Why and How they can charge? What happens when an uninsured motorist gets into an accident? Everyone else suffers. That's why it is illegal to go without insurance and that is why you have to pay the fines.

They can do about any damn thing they want.
Reason is they want you to GET and KEEP car insurance.
I would bet money that they have laws on the books to back up everything you have said.
