Can a dog get mrsa (methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus) from a human? If so how dangerous is it for the dog? I have a very sick friend in the last stages of cancer that also has MRSA, he would love to see my dogs (Chihuahua & Daschund) one last time, but I'm concerned for their safety.

I tried to call my Vet but, It's Saturday and I can't get a hold of anyone, that's why I thought I'd give this a try.

Your dogs can't catch mrsa from him, even if the disease was catchy from humans to dogs they would have to ingest some of his bodily fluids to catch it, ex, spit, urine, and bm.

I suggest putting the name (you've typed in parentheses) into Yahoo!'s search engine --followed by, "dog"-- then run a search. There are several articles that come up on the list.
You are a good friend to consider your friends wishes! So many wouldn't bother. Another way you might encourage your friend is to read the following series of articles to them. They are designed to be Very Encouraging ...

It is extremely unlikely that your dogs will get MRSA. MRSA is species specific meaning it only occurs in one or related species (humans/apes). Humans can only catch MRSA if they come in contact with the bacteria through breathing ( respiratory MRSA) or coming in contact with the wound or drainage ( wound MRSA).
MRSA developed as a result of overuse of antibiotics as did VRE (Vancomycin resistant E. Coli). MRSA and VRE can be cured but only through the use of 5th and 6th generation powerful antibiotics. It takes testing and swab cultures to determine just what stage the disease is in. Is your friend at home? If so, I wouldn't worry about it he had to be tested before he left the hospital. If you still have questions please talk with your friend and ask your vet.

The best way to get this answer is to call your veterinarian and ask him/her.
I would think that as long as neither of your dogs has an immune problem and no open sores and is not allowed to lick or have contact with any of your friends wounds, things would be fairly safe, but do check with your vet first.

Sorry but I am not qualified to answer. Look the disorder up on line and call a vet? Sorry to hear about your friend. Glad you care enough about your animals to ask. Good Luck, I know you want to make your friend happy..... Hope you can. While looking it up on line see if you too may have a risk.
