These are all rated top notch, all are free, free updates, etc. Used them all for 2+ yrs with no glitches, no virus, no spam, no issues.

This is more along the lines of a personal choice. Each person you ask will have a different answer for different reasons. I've used just about every internet security program out there and my personal choice is Panda Internet Security. Built in firewall, antispyware, antivirus, antiphising, truprevent (meaning it can detect viruses, etc without having the latest definitions), and it even comes with an optional parental control you can install with it. I've seen Norton report viruses that it can't get rid of. Both Norton and McAfee will cause problems with network connectivity unless you go in and configure them. Panda doesn't cause those types of problems. Install it and go. Also it automatically updates everyday so long as it has an internet connection.
Be aware that any good internet security program (firewall, antivirus, the works) you get will require about 512MB ram and a processor over 800MHZ or it will slow your system down.
Note: I also agree that Norton is the worse. Also the problem with free ones is that most of them DO NOT PREVENT you from getting viruses, etc. They can only scan your system periodically to see if you have got them then try to remove them. It's always better not to get them in the first place than to try and go back and clean them after the fact.

For spyware, Spybot Search and Destroy, and Ad-Aware are both well established products (both free) with good reputations.
Another free program worth having is Spywareblaster. This works in a slightly different way than the others, in that it prevents spyware, listed in it's database from getting on your machine in the first place.
Windows XP service pack 2 comes with it's own firewall.
Not sure about free antivirus, I run McAfee for that.

In combination they work very well.
You can get Zone alarms from
