I think that one of the biggest reasons is because couples rush into relationships. There's an initial attraction, usually physical, but then the two individuals don't take enough time to get know eachother as friends before making a romantic commitment to eachother. So instead of blossoming on top of a secure base of friendship, the new couple has to first take the time to figure out who eachother is. Unfortunately, in most cases when the initial attraction wears off and they don't like who the other person really is, the relationship runs into problems, and usually ends, because they find that they can't communicate with eachother in one way or another.
Being friends first is key; only friendship can blossom into true love. It's like long-lasting married couples always say when asked how they've lasted so long, "He's/she's my best friend."
