thanks for making me laugh! Of course English is not the first language here in Holland, Dutch is. And the guttural g does not cause throat cancer, otherwise we would be extinct by now. No idea where you got this funny information!
But yes, most of us do speak some English, not because we could catch British TV over The Channel, but just because at least one foreign language is obligatory in high school. In my time I had to take English, French and German (besides Dutch, of course), AND Latin and ancient Greek. Not that I speak the latter two... The school system has changed, though, and now you can choose your languages.. at least one besides Dutch. Most people choose English.
Greetings from Holland!

Good thought but I don't think so. I was amazed to realise how many Cloggies spoke perfect English. Before the days of satellite those near the coast could pick up British TV and Radio. Coronation Street was particularly popular.

No of course not. English has been the first language of the Dutch for a while now, so if this has happened I'm not suprised

No, it's because it was costing women too much money.
Mind you, last time I was in Amsterdam, the only person to speak to me in Dutch was an American - so you may be right.

The guttural G is not so hard once you've practiced it a bit - think of coughing up some plegm and the sound it makes, but don't spit, it's rude.
