It was invented at the Watergate Hotel a long time ago. Has nothing to do with Nixon. It was their trademark specialty.

As I understand (?) it, the salad was invented by a chef at the Watergate Hotel.
This is the answer I found on line:
"Watergate cake and Watergate salad got their names from the scandal that caused President Nixon's resignation, but the connection between politics and dessert isn't clear."

The salad has been around since the 1950's but someone decided to name it Watergate in the 1960's because it was full of nuts.
It's like Sock it to Me cake or other dishes named for things that were going on in that era.

Chef is right. It's the trademark salad from the Hotel...nothing more political than that.
Although ckm's answer made me laugh!
