My mom has a cat she adopted several years ago. We think he's about 7-9 years old. When she got him he was neutered and had been declawed front and back. :-(

Anyway, to get to my question, this morning I saw him standing by the door so I went to let him out and I noticed he was spraying a thin reddish/brown substance from under his tail (which was twitching...) It was only a very small amount of fluid (maybe 1-2 ml), he was not squatting as if to pee, it had no smell. What was the fluid? Why was he spraying? Should he go to the vet? He acted normal other than the spraying.

Thanks in advance for any help/info!

Moonfairy and CF_ I understand your concern about letting him outside--if he were mine I wouldn't let him out, but as he's not mine, all I can do is what my mom does with him--and that's let him out. If it sets you at ease at all, in the several years she has had him he has not once been in a fight or been injured (I know that's not always the case, but it has held true for him!) Thanks for all the info so far! :-)

If it was redish color I would try to get a sample and get to the vet. He could have a urinary tract infection. This is common for males in that age group. The vet will do a urine sample test and probley give you some antibiotics to treat the infection and then suggest changing the diet to a lower ph or urinary tract health food to help prevent this. The reason why he was "spraying" is probley because the infection hurts and he thinks the litter box causes the pain, so you may need to buy a new litter box and a different kind of litter to encourage him to use it. Good luck!

With the red in the spray I would suspect there is some blood in his urinary tract. He may have an infection or crystal formation and a urine sample should be tested by a vet to see if this is the problem.

This is very uncomfortable situation for him and he should be helped with the irritation and pain as soon as you can.

He was marking in the same way a dog would. Don't know why it didnt smell, it normally does.

You really shouldn't be letting a declawed cat outside, he has no way of defending himself from other animals.

The new methods used to neuter cats these days allow them to scent mark their territory without having that nasty odor. This is normal behavior for a cat and nothing to worry about. The substance is mostly urine mixed with secretions from the scent glands, its nasty but harmless.
