I'm just curious... which one would come out of a 40 mph side-impact collision better? Obviously, the Mini has airbags and the 1969 Camaro doesn't, but would good ol' American Iron compensate? Thanks in advance to all who answer!

Although I love old American iron they are death traps when compared to any modern automobile. 1969 was pre-door intrusion beams, metal surfaces mere inches away from passengers heads and legs, sternum crushing steering columns, teeth bashing rock-hard steering wheels, rotten brakes, no head rests, nominal seat belts, etc, etc.
Given all this, I probably would still drive the Camaro vs the Mini. I'm funny that way...

TOUGH CALL !, I prefer the 69 Camaro myself but for safety ? The Mini Cooper will out perform the 69 hands down in a collision in almost any case because of modern technology, also the Camaro seat belts lack a shoulder harness unless they were installed as an option.
NOW, On a side impact I would have to go with 69 Camaro because the metal in yesterday's cars was heavier then it is in today's cars even though the 69 car may be wrote off at that speed of collision, (40mph=60kph) at least you may survive the impact.
But still, if I was given the choice........69 Camaro or a new Mini Cooper..........?

It would really depend what kind of car you want and where you live. If you live where you have mud season or winter I would not go for the camaro unless you have the $ to buy a winter car and only drive the camaro in the summer. If you dont get the camaro though I would not get a mini cooper I would consider getting something sporty looking such as the nissan altima coupe or the honda accord coupe both of which will run you between $20,000 and $30,000 new....

The Mini's are like driving in a matchbox...the Camaro's were built much tougher back in the 60's and 70's.

My bet would be the Camaro
