I use it as a nurse and as a mom. I love the stuff. And it is actually safe. Its homeopathic. My 2 year old likes the bubblegum flavor.

I went through the same ordeal a few weeks ago with my daughter. I called my pediatrician. He told us not to give any cough medicines to our daughter until she's like 5 or 6 years old. I was frustrated with that answer because my daughter wasn't sleeping well. He told us to use Vick's and a humidifier in her room. Our budget was super tight and I couldn't afford to run out and get a humidifier for her room. How I handled it: I continued the Benadryl...well actually due to my daughter's asthma & allergies she's on Xyzal so I gave her her normal dose of that at bedtime. I put a small pea sized amount of Vick's Vaporub on her chest and then on the bottoms of her feet w/ socks to cover. Like I said, she has asthma but it's normally only triggered with sickness so I gave her a treatment. I don't know what worked...the vaporub, the treatment or her allergy medicine but either way she slept beautifully that night so I did it for two more nights until the cough seemed to be finally subsiding. It was still rough getting her to fall asleep but once she was asleep, she stayed asleep. Try the Vick's and humidifier. The benadryl is mainly good at drying up the runny noses but doesn't do much for coughs. I'd skip the AM dose if you can and keep it for the PM to help her sleep. Call your pediatrician as well to see if they can suggest anything else. Good luck!

Mucinex is an expectorant that helps to thin out secretions. It seems to work great in children and adults. Having said that, it really only works if you drink a lot of water with it. So, the conundrum is...is it the Mucinex or the water that is working to thin secretions?

Since water will also thin out secretions, I would probably just encourage my child to increase his or her fluid intake (decaffeinated, non-carbonated fluids).
