I THINK YOU SHOULD JUST BE HONEST. THANK THE PERSON FOR ASKING YOU OUT BUT TELL THEM AT THIS TIME YOU WOULD RATHER JUST BE FRIENDS.BE POLITE IF THERE FEELINGS ARE HURT AT THE TIME LATER ON WHEN THEY THINK ABOUT IT THEY WILL RESPECT THE FACT YOU DID NOT LIE OR JUST AVOID THEM.WE ALL GET DISAPPOINTED BUT, LIKE TO BE TOLD THE TRUTH!!!

You know, I think it'd be best if you tell him the truth. Tell him you're not interested. I'm sure he'll get it. Making up excuses like doing something else is just lame and it prolongs the inevitable, which is that you're going to turn him down however you do it. You're going to do him a favor by telling him the truth.

Tell them why you don't want to go out with them and ask them what they find so attractive about you. Ask what if anything made them think you were available?
