The main benefit of a long workout with a jump-rope ('skipping' here in the UK) is the increase in your heart rate that is required to supply enough blood to the legs & arms (cardiovascular endurance).

(the muscles in your legs and arms are making small repetitive movements, unless you include a lot of exotic moves like split jumps & double crosses; these movements aren't actually very challenging, although they can improve the 'local endurance' ability in those muscles a little)

Depending on the complexity of your moves, you can also improve the 'fourth element' of your fitness: SKILL (the others are Strength, Stamina, and Suppleness. Some people also include 'Speed')
