When I came home from work yesterday my 15 pound tiger cat was quietly sick. He'd thrown up watery fluid, and had pooped a bit here and there. He could still jump to places, and he would lie there quietly and then would yowl a few times. When I went down to check on him before I went to bed, he was lying on his side, and he was dead. Just dead. Just like that. I have been unable to reach my vet, left a message, and can't stop just crying. I wonder if anyone might know what was wrong with him...?? He was a very pretty, shiny, happy and playful cat. The evening before, he had been fine...lying on my lap, and cuddling up to sleep with me. Now he's gone...wrapped up in a towel in a box. I'm crying as I write this... so...does anyone know what was wrong with him??? I miss him something awful. Thanks.

I am sorry for your loss! I suspect your cat had hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, where the heart walls thicken until the heart can't pump blood any more. If he threw a small clot yesterday, you could see signs like those you describe, and there is a very distinctive cry they make. He probably threw a larger clot that went to his brain and killed him instantly. I have heard of cats w/HCM that died in their owners' laps without ever making a sound. The other possibility is that he had a bladder obstruction, and his bladder ruptured, but those cats are usually sicker longer than you describe before they die. These are the most likely explanations for such a sudden death. Both more common in big kitties and in males, and there really isn't much you could have done about the heart condition. Take care- sudden losses are so hard.

I know 6 months seems a long time, but your cat may still be adjusting. Maybe, your cat can't be fooled by those fake cat toys. Try bringing him a long piece of grass or invite a fly inside. Rattle his toys around under a newspaper so he can't see the toys. I think a companion cat at his age isn't a good idea. He is probably getting older and a bit less playful. Have you tried giving him catnip. Not all cats respond to catnip. My cats really only like to play around midnight to 3 a.m. He probably isn't bored. I bet he is enjoying being around you more and wants to show his affection. Cats sleep at least 13 hours a day and seem to know how to enjoy simple pleasures like a catnap and aren't as goal-oriented as humans since we feed them.

if you really need answers, for closure, you can take him to any vet that is open, and if you want you can have them do an autopsy....If you don't really need to do this then bury him with the knowing that you will be together again someday, and the pain will go away in time!

I am so sorry for your loss....i understand completely (we just had a dog die out of no where, but she was very old...)

I give you my deepest sympathy.

I read your post and am so sorry about your cat. I have a Himalayan male cat, and he's one of the family. Not sure there would be any way to know what happened to your cat without a necropsy. Again I know what you're going threw, and I'm so sorry.

watery fuild is probably BILE..
did he go out?? could he have been poisoned???
usually an ailing pet will have sypmtoms which is why I suspect something more fast like poison or trauma...

Oh, I'm so sorry for your loss!

The only thing I can think of that might have caused that sudden demise was that he had somehow gotten into something poisonous, or perhaps had eaten something that splinterred inside him.

Again, I am so sorry!
