My 3 1/2 year old still puts everything she picks up straight in her mouth ---- I'm at my wits end. Does anyone have any ideas on ways to curb this behavior?

I do mean EVERYTHING she touches goes straight in her mouth, she's even chipped one of her teeth.

I asked her pediatrician about this during her last checkup at 3 and she said it was okay, but I don't notice any other kids her age doing this.

Any suggestions?? Does anyone else have a child this old that still does this?

You have to be consistent. Tell her "no" strongly when she does it. Give positive reinforcement, praise, stickers when she does not do it. Make a deal with her: If she does not put anything into her mouth (but food, etc) for a whole day she can have an extra story at bedtime, if she goes a whole week she can pick out a toy.
Good luck.
p.s. sounds like your pediatrician is a jerk-she should not disregard your concerns.

It could be that she is getting in more teeth adn the only relief for her is putting things in h er nouth to rub on those gums , i think taking her to a dentist just to be on the safe side would be wise adn if your ped has checked her out and looked in her mouth adn seen no sign of infection that could be causing her to want to rub an irritant in her mouth then maybe a dentist visit might give you another point off view...also just try to keep really tiny object out of her reach because choking is such a big scare adn half of the tiime you cant even tell that you child is choking because you cant hear it, andother good tick taht my mom tried with me is to put something really spicy on something that you know that she isgoing to put in her mouth, in a way it is like sabotaging her but at least if you do this for a week consistently she will know that things she puts in her mouth burn her mouth and hopefully she will stop, i know i did this when i was a kid and in under a week my mm got me out of that habit and now that i have my own child i will do the same if she displays the same behavouir, but give it a try...put something downt that you know she wont choke on and that she will put in her mouth and put some hot sauce on it or something fold tasting....gaurantee to stop that behaviour in a jiff!!!!

There's a certain kind of really bitter fingernail polish my mom used to paint my nails with as a means to stop me from biting my nails. Perhaps if you found some of it and painted some stuff with it it'd make her stop. It's clear, so it won't show up. Other than that, buy her a chew toy or something. I've babysat for kids who put everything in their mouths as well. I even heard a psychologist tell me once that orally stimulating things for babies are as pleasurable as sex for adults. So try not to be too harsh on your kid, whatever you do. She should grow out of it eventually.

This is a toddler-level behavior. A child who is 3 should not be putting things that are not edible into their mouth. By this age, she should have stopped putting things into her mouth, and determined the things that are edible from inedible. She may still have some oral development that needs to be worked on.

Other than say NO and chasing them everywhere is the only thing that I can say. I have 2 boys that did the same thing. The good news is that it will stop. The bad news is the dentist bill sucks to repair there teeth :(

when i was little i did the same thing. my parents slapped my hands or my mouth depending on how far i got with the object. I learned that it hurts and quit doing it. People underestimate pain as a behavior correction tool.
