Someone told me about some free software called Latec but I can't find it anywhere. I'm writing academic research papers and would really like to find it. Any help would be much appreciated, thanks.

What you are after is LaTex (http://www.latex-project.org/) It's extremely powerful but it takes a lot to get to grips with. There is some excellent documentation on the site.
