ok so im a guitarist as well . i started playing acoustic .. eh. 3 or 4 years ago ,.. on and off unofrtunately.
now what im about to recommend... will sound extremely .. stupid, miserable, and like something u really dont want to do.. but im telling u.. it works. Thats how i learned to play the very first songs i ever played. Note: These mostly are not rythem songs. I mean for u to play the lead parts. Learn to play things like amazing grace, greensleeves, etc. basic holiday songs, country spirit songs. After you master those, you will have a much GREATER understanding of guitar plus you will have started developing certain habits of playing. Once you master those, i'd suggest starting with bands like .. Blink 182, Green Day, etc. to get the feel for chords and stuff like that. Then just feel to free to splurge and test your limits on any song you want to try. (You'll figure out what u can and cant play by this time trust me). The link below has tabs for almost every song i've ever looked for. Good luck fellow guitarist!

Beatles: All My Loving, Let It Be
I have a book from the music store called "Easy Pop Melodies" which has a nice variety, including the above. You might try to find that.
Or try the link below for free tabs.
Good luck! I've just started, also.

you should consider ordering Guitar magizines. i wouldn't know a good answers to this, since i have a guitar, and have guitar related magazines, and don't play it. John mayer plays the guitar. an easy going song from him is "daughters". (go to aol music search, and type in his name to hear the song)

john lee hooker, boogie chillin`- you have a simple A chord.
put your index finger on the D,G &B strings at the 2 nd. fret
pick ,up stroke on the up beat 1-2-3-4. next, pick the open A
string, 1 down beat, C - 3rd fret 2 down beat, D- 5th fret
3 down beat, C- 3rd fret 4 down beat... thats two measures.....
it just repeats over & over. this is the best funky exercise i know
you get down on this its like a ride on the wave...

'Yesterday' is an easy pick, of course, and 'Cavatina' is beautiful...and quite easy to learn.
If you want a measure of your progress, find a piece called "Recuerdos de la Alhambra" by Francisco Tárrega. When you can play that - even moderately well - you're a god! :)
