There are a few choices you can have:

There's IME which comes already with your computer. To get that go to Control Panel ---> Regional Options ---> Add other languages ---> Hit the "details" button (and if install files for East Asian languages isn't checked--though it probably will be since you can see them on Yahoo--make sure you check it) ---> and then Add a Japanese keyboard.
A little button should pop up with "En" on it. Click on that and select "JP". To type in Japanese, you need to make sure your input mode doesn't say A. If it does, you'll need to select "Hiragana" (You'll know you did it right because it should change to あ because otherwise you'll be typing in roomaji which is useless to you).
If you're having trouble with input (like it's putting ちinstead of あ), Google around on it as many people get this problem and I know there's some way to fix it but since I don't use IME, I don't know of it.

Personally, though, I hate IME. It's annoying. So I use a word processor instead. I just find it so much easier to type with than having to constantly switch over from hiragana to katakana with IME. It can be downloaded here if you're interested: http://www.physics.ucla.edu/~grosenth/jwpce.html

There are also sites you can input roomaji and they'll do the work for you, but the one I know of only does roomaji to the kanas. http://kanjidict.stc.cx/

Well, you'll need a language pack for it. I'd recommend going to the Microsoft website and downloading that language pack first off, if I'm understanding your question right and you're just looking for the ability to see the Japanese characters on all sites, not just Yahoo!.

However, if you're looking for a Japanese word processor, then I'd recommend http://www.physics.ucla.edu/~grosenth/jwpce.html , it's a word processor I've used before, and to my best recollection, it worked fine for me. I hope I've been able to answer your question.
