The 6 days have often been misinterpreted as 6 24 hour days. Because of this, many have said that creation is a fantasy, and fair enough, from that point of view, it is a fantasy. However, the term "day" can be interpretted in our language as an indefinite period of time. For instance "In my day.." doesn't refer ro a literal 24 hrs, but a period of time that may extend to a few years.

How can this term be intepreted in the Bible? There are one or two scriptural principle which can help us see that God views time differently from us. A day is sometimes exchanged for a year in prophetic descriptions. A thousand years in God's view is described once or twice as a day. If you think about it, time for us seems to pass by quicker with each year. Annual events seem to come quicker each year as we get older. God has always been there, He even invented time and has complete mastery over it. The six thousand years since Man was first created on the Earth is a fleeting moment to Him.

The exact length of time refered to by the creative days is uncertain. They could all be the same length, but they might not be. Scientists generally agree that the Universe is many billions of billions of years old and that the Earth is many millions of millions of years old (Im sorry I don't know the actual estimates). The Bible does not disagree with this with the exact language it uses.

Each creative period or day has it's own distinctive character and is written from the point of view of someone stand on the Earth's surface. The first creative period does not start until verse 3 of Genesis 1 and describes how light first reached the surface of the Earth (Which was first introduced in verse 2) and, with the planet already spinning, how night and day came to be formed. Verses 6 & 7 goes on to describe the completion of the atmosphere in the 2nd day... It goes on in a similar vein, describing a significant thing that came into being during each creative day.

It's interesting to note that God concluded each day by saying that it was very good. Man was created in the 6th day, and that was described as very good. In chapter 2, we are introduced to the 7th day, but nowhere is it described as good, even though is is described as a rest day for God, who chose this day to rest from His creative works. If this day is not described as good, but all of God's activities are good, we must conclude that the 7th creative day has not finished yet. It may be understood that this day will finished when His will is done throughout the Earth, which means it will finish when His kingdom will have brought everything back into subjection to Him. That kingdom is to rule the Earth for 1000 years. By then, the 7th day will be at least 7000 years old. If all the other creative days were this old, it would be at least 48000 years since light first broke though to the Earth's surface as per the description in verses 3-5. Of course, the Earth itself would have to be much older than 48000 years according to Bible language.

They are days.

At His word creation sprang into being, ready made.

He created something out of nothing. Only He can.

He chose to do this in six days and rest on the seventh for our instruction.

This shows that the first covenant, the covenant of works, which we have broken, needs to be rested from and that we need to cease from our own works to be right with God and rely upon His perfect provison, according to promise, by faith. That cannot fail for it depends upon Him.

He is so great and wonderful that in his wisdom and foreknowledge all our lives and works have been foreseen from before the foundation of the world.

As to the length of days argument - do you think that the Almighty God, who is limited by nothing, and who can do exceedingly abundantly more than we can even think, and who has amply demonstrated such, has to struggle and take long periods of time to create ? Just to please the weakness of our minds and faith no doubt ?

If anything He rather created in a moment and waited for the next day, since these things have been done deliberately for our edification and instruction. Is anything too difficult for the Lord ?

No, He created in six days as He has said.

It's in Genesis. But remember that in the original Greek, the word "day" actually means a period of time, and not necessarily a 24 hr day. In later verses the bible also says that to God "a thousand yrs as is a day, and a day is as a thousand yrs". Which gives more credence to the "unknown period of time" interpretation.

He created the earth and everything in it in 6 days and on the 7th day he rested.

Is that what you're referring to?
