you can either buy oem or retail versions of xp for home use. OEM basically means all you get is a cd and installation key, with the retail you'll get fancy packaging and a manual but you'll pay extra for it.
i used an oem xp pro on the pc i just built so you don't have to worry about it not working

OEM software can only legally be installed onto a brand new machine, it is is aimed at computer builders, not people looking to upgrade their systems.
You can buy full versions of XP pro from most computer retailers such as PC World and on the Web. If buying from unknown sources ensure that you get the Certificate of Authenticity and the original disk with a hologram on it or again you may not be legal.
Full versions cost more then OEM but at least you are legal and you can recieve full support and backup from Microsoft

oem is original equpitment manufacturer with a key code
upgrade disk is for installing over top of the present o/s personally I prefer the oem for too many reasons to list. The #1 reason for me is that I get a CLEAN FRESH install and am not carrying over any issues with the currently present o/s
I Have used the * upgrade disks many times before most have the same end result which " aint happy" to get a great deal on an oem xp o/s follow the lnk below.. The xp home oem is about 89$ the pro is about 139$ Seriously though; if its not for business application? the home is your best bet price wise as well as disk space cheers~

First, try out the FREE test install that runs Live in the CDrom.
http://pclinuxos.com will amaze you.
OEM means 'Original Equipment Manufacturer', but, in the sense used here, it means a generic "use it anywhere, in any production machine" cdrom. Though it actually isn't that good, it might work for most PCs...
The Compaq OEM cd works best with all the special hardware included in Compaqs. that one would be the preferred one.

when buying a windows cd - make sure it has the OEM on it (this varifies that the product is an authentic microsoft product
as for the one you want - compare the differences in the various Windows XP versions
such as -
Windows Home
Windows Professional
Windows Media Center Edition
go to this website for more information (you will see these different versions along the left side of the window)

oem versions are made for p.c builders and companys who build p.cs
to be honest i have bought a oem version from dabs.com and installed it fine, you dont install it from the desktop with a oem version, you should "boot it from cd" by going into set up(press delete at start up) and enter bios advanced options, then look for boot order and set cd-rom as the first boot device, then save and exit set up...then when you boot up again the p.c will look at the cd rom first and when your o.e.m version of windows xp is inserted it will start the set up
you will see the message"press any key to boot from cd"....do this and then follow on-screen instructions,,,p.s this is also a good time to partition your hard drive if you want to,you will come to a partition manger just after windows has loaded its first set of files, you can delete and create partitions and also decide what file system you ant to use(fat32 or ntfs....ntfs prefered)
o.e.m actually stands for original equipment manufacturer, but it is completely safe to use one of these versions, that is why they sell them, but if you dont activate on-line and ring up microsoft, tell them you are building your second p.c just to be safe
finally xp pro oem disks will be much more expensive than the home editions and the difference is minimal, you can pick up a xp home o.e.m dirt cheap from http://www.misco.co.uk/productinformation/~Q75714~WW~/MICROSOFT%20OEM%20Microsoft%20Windows%20XP%20Home%20Edition%20Ed.htm,i have looked all over the web and this is the cheapest oem of xp....
good luck

Are you attempting to enhance to Win XP professional ? it somewhat is not supported. the only way around it somewhat is to first improve ninety 8 SE to Win 2000 and then improve to professional. the ultimate answer in case you desire the two Win ninety 8 and Win XP would be to get something like equipment Commander. then you quite can reproduction the Win ninety 8 partition and improve one among the two partitions.
