I like to serve it whole with a lemon butter sauce.

Clean the spears and cut off the tough white part of the stalk. Asparagus absorb sand so hold the individual spears under a stream of warmish water to free the soil in the spear then drain and tied into a bundle with string or those heavy rubber bands.

My husband is French they eat the stalks whole and the immerse them in boiled salted water for a few minutes. You have to tie them in a bundle to do this and lay them on their side. In France there are special pans for asparagus but I just use a big pan and cover the bundle. Take out drain and cut the string or rubber bands and serve on a plate with each quest getting some spears and a dish of butter for dipping.

Butter about half a pound, juice one lemon, salt and pepper for the sauce for about 4 people

You take the spear in your fingers and dip it in the butter. You can place warm water finger bowls at each guests plate with a slice of lemon so they can clean their fingers after the asparagus- very pleasant and fun.

YUM

The most reliable way to cook asparagus is not to let it come
in direct contact with water. I have a microwave steamer
which cost very little and is meant for fish but it is oblong and is
ideal for asparagus spears. You can put a slash of white wine or
water if you must in the base.
It is also very good cooked on a griddle coated in a little olive oil.
It always cooks much faster than you think and should be served
al dente.

if it's canned asparagus; you just warm it up with salt, pepper, and a little butter. Then I always add a cheese sauce over the top. If it's fresh asparagus, you will need to steam it in a very small amount of water, say1/4 cup, salted, then add your seasonings, and your melted cheese on top. The best sauce of course is hollandaise sauce. Most of the time you can pick this up in a package at your local grocery store; in the same ille as other seasonings are found.

Brush with garlic-infused olive oil and sprinkle with salt. Roast flat on a jelly roll pan in your oven for 5-8 minutes (depending on thickness) at about 225 C.

Steam it until crisp-tender, serve on a bed of basmati rice (all spears aligned with tips pointing one way) and drizzle hollandaise over the middle section of the spears. Really nice presentation!

I love boiling asparagus (remember to add a pinch of salt when boiling) then adding butter or parmesan cheese on top.
