The cheap thrill of a "high" will always be sought by those desperate for an escape from their current situation or to gain acceptance from their peers and will use whatever avails itself to them. Glues and other industrial chemicals are easily come by and will induce a "high" at the cost of unrecoverable brain cells. Another cheap high is strangulation to the point of passing out. Any of these can result in immediate death no matter how many times you may have tried it before. It just takes that one time to end it all so don't even try it once.

Paint, gas, dust off, I would keep an eye on my kid, the kid will most defeniatly regret doing this later on in life, the normal age kids do this is from 12 to about 15 or so, I have read some good ways to help your kid is to roll play with them at an early age if you can, like play as one of thier peers trying to get them to do this stuff and then help them build their cofidnese in saying no, other than that you could research the consiquens of doing any of these and then explain to them the harmful sideeffects, both short term and long term,,,

i dont know, but i think more kids are getting into less harmful ways of getting high, such as smoking herb, but some are also using the current popular drug of the area, usually an area has a drug which predominates others (excluding weed, which is available easily nearly anywhere), such as my current area specialises in blow (cocaine), while my other place of residence in central california, of course, specialises in ice (methamphetamine).
but im sure there are still kids who sniff glue in school, or acetone nailpolish and the like, this is the absolute hands down worst type of way to get high. and i believe due to the internet, dxm (dextromethorphan) is getting to be more popular, which isnt actually that dangerous in itself, but a lot of kids dont do research and go get triple C (coricidin cough and cold) which contains an anticholinergic type antihistamine called CPM (chlorpheneramine maleate) which is particularly dangerous in combo with dxm, and by itself, in high doses.

Music seems to be a lot bigger than it was before, probably with the advent of free downloading being accesible to basically everyone.
EDIT
This is the biggest fad right now. If you were talking about self-destructive fads specifically, I'd say cutting is the biggest one, along with ellicit drugs.

Kids don't sniff anything now, but they do watch R rated movies and like to play violent videogames.

I guess they still do, but lately a lot of them have been getting high on Sudafed and Coricidin. Keep an eye on your kids and your medicine cabinet!
