Because this is for your homework, I don't want to give you direct answers, but there are some awesome resources out there about Broadway that I really recommend using or seeing if your library has them:
The Rise and Fall of the Broadway Musical by Mark Grant (This gives amazing information regarding both history and significance.
It Happened on Broadway: An Oral History of the Great White Way by Myrna Katz Frommer
http://www.talkinbroadway.com/bway101/ An interesting website on the history of Broadway.

Well, other answers gave you a good source for info...
So I will contribute my favorites for different reasons.
Musically speaking... Les Miserables (Modern) Man of La Mancha (inspirational) Most Happy Fella (operatic) Fantastiks, Music Man, Lion King, Oklahoma, Showboat for various historical and musical importance.
PBS aired a very good series on the Broadway and musical theatre recently (within the last 18 months or so)
Good luck with your project.

I'll start by saying "I don't know." You'll have to look it up and do some research.
I'd think you'd start with Vaudeville and look at the transition into Musical Theater.
I think the early one's were mostly spectacle like the scenes in Funny Girl referencing back to that era.
And then the transition into narrative story telling, like Showboat.
I'd love to do your music project -- I might look at the influence of jazz music into jazz dance and those influences on writers like Cole Porter.
When you get to the 60's, look at the Modern and Post-Modern influences on musicals like The Fantasticks.
I've always wondered if The Fantasticks, Pippin, Candide and the straight play Our Town was influenced by the Minimalist Art Movement -- the stripping down of work to it's bare bones.

There are a lot of "great" musicals, but I feel as though that's more a matter of taste than anything. Musicals like Cats and Les Miserables were very long-running and more successful than other shows on Broadway, though.

Almost everyone is familiar with www.imdb.com which is the Internet Movie Database, but few know about www.ibdb.com, the Internet Broadway Database.
As a reference, it is the best site I've found to get specific answers about ANY Broadway show.
