Measure the longest side in feet and then measure the remaining side in feet. Multiply together to get the square footage. For example, if one side is 12 ft. and 6 inches, and the other side is 10 feet and 9 inches, first convert the inches into feet ( 6 in = 0.5 feet and 9 inches = 0.75 feet). Then multiply 12.5 X 10.75 which equals 134.375 square feet. If the room is irregular, try to break it down into separate rectangles; figure out the square footage of each; and then add them together.

Some rooms are square so that determining the square footage is really a matter of measuring each dimension and multiplying.

However, in some cases, rooms have little sections that are outside of the rectangle. The most certain and simple way of dealing with the areas outside of the rectangle is to measure them separately and add them to the main rectangular area.

Take how long the room is and how wide it is and multiply them together. If you have an odd shaped room then break the room down to smaller pieces, multiply those and add them together.
If a room is 9 ft. by 12 ft. that square footage would be 108 square foot.
