It all depends on what activities you were involved with prior to the symptom. You may have pulled a muscle, pinched some nerves, bruised a rib, cracked a rib, dislocated it or broke it outright. If you have not been engaged in any serious activity or exercise it could be a symptom of a different, internal medical condition all together. If you are clueless to what may have caused it and it has persisted longer than a couple of days without improvement or it worsens, seek medical attention ASAP.

Most likely you pulled a muscle there. Also, an inflamed membrane will cause pain in the area. Don't worry about it unless the pain is severe or lasts more than a day or two, then see your doctor.

could be your lung. does it hurt when you breath or cough? could be a pinched nerve in your back. Does it hurt when you sit, turn, lay down, walk, twist....could be kidneys. Are you urinating more than usual, not urinating enough, bad odor, strong odor in your urine, or does your pain come in spells? Could be kidney stones, kidney infection, gall bladder problems, stomach problems, lordy...could be lots of things.
