The answers goes back many centuries. In the past there was a HUGE risk of miscarriage and death during birth due to poor medical practies. Due to this birth rates were very low and there was a legitimate threat of a society dying out. Religion, then, as it does now, attempted to fix a societal problem by outlawing masturbation in the hope that if they outlawed masturbation people would be more interested in the opposite sex, would have more sex, and hence create more babies, alleviating the concern that a population crisis (too few) would ensue.

Many religions, especialy Christian based, believe that orgasms should only culminate from an act of procreation. In other words, sex is only for making children. Also, many religions see masturbation as self indulgent. I think if you investigated western (Asian) religions, you'd find the practice of masturbation more acceptable and sometimes encouraged.

The reason it's oft considered even less acceptable for women is do to the repressive nature of society for thousands of years.

It says that it's better to plant ones seed in the belly of a whore, than spill it on the ground!
But abortion creates horryfying energies on the spiritual level. And we will
soon come face to face with the spiritual evil we have created on this world.
Myself, I realize there weren't that many people long ago. And the Bible dealt with the times. But in todays world with disease, and abortion, and violent
relationships. Plus Jesus saying, "Woe to those who try to feed their
children in the last days!" Masturbation is the last thing we need to be worrying about!

many religions expect you to maintain "pure" thoughts....and fantasizing about thing and bringing your mind to an "immoral" level via masturbation is "a sin against god"
He gave us a sex drive, and the ability to choose to do as we please....so basically it's a bunch of hyprocrites trying to tell you that you are a sinner in another way. There is nothing wrong with masturbation, and as women know.....it's a great way to lessen cramping and reduce stress.....so relax and don't listen to them.........they probably do it too, but wanna be "holier than thou"

Religions are threatened by anything sexual. I believe masturbation is a healthy and armless way to make oneself happy and can even heighten sexual intimacy with a partner.

That's why I think Islam is great. Islam is more flexible with human needs. In Islam, Masturbation is forbidden. However, if one have no control over surrounding seductions, masturbation becomes ok to practice.

Masturbation is wrong because Sex is the most Holy of all things. It is the one activity when we come closest to being God like : the creation of sentient life. As such, it is wrong to engage in any form of sex when you exclude the possibility of having a child.
