Download this codec pack:

Alternatively, download VLC media player, which plays almost anything you throw at it.

Windows Media Player plays avi files. If there is only the one .avi file that it won't play, the chances are that the file itself is incomplete or defective. If you downloaded this file from the net, you should go back and re-download it, and make sure that after downloading, the file size that the downloader says it is downloading matches the size of the file that you have when completing the download.
In the case of an avi file that is incomplete or defective, it won't help to get some other player or an additional codec [but it won't hurt].
You can go get DivFix, a program that "fixes" avi's by stripping out and rebuilding the file index, so that the data that you do have can be played - this often works, but if the data is incomplete, you won't have the whole video, just the part that got downloaded.

You need to download Real player or something else that has a .avi codec. I believe you can even configure windows media player with an avi codec. Just search Google for .avi codec or download Divx player(I think that automatically plays it).

You may need the DivX converter - you can download it for free I think (I did for Mac, and they haven't asked me for money yet).
