I'm going to have to go with Van Gouh, however Monet is my personal favorite. I would kill for one of his paintings. As in Singer, I would say the Beatles are probably the most famous...

Two artists that everybody must have heard of are,
Pablo Picasso (1881-1973)
Leonardo da Vinci (1452-1519)
in the runners-up positions, I would say John Constable (1776-1837), JMW Turner (1775-1851) and Michaelangelo (1475-1564).

This answer cannot be answered realisticly, we all know of the great artists such as Pablo Picasso, Vincent Vangogh, Motzart, Jackson Pollock, etc but its not that they are "the most famous" its that we know who they are because of the amazing works they have done or that they inspired a movement or made us think, and that we are still enjoying today. We can however state our opinion of who we like the most. In my oppinion I would say Pablo Picasso, and Motzart.

I believe that it would be Pablo Picasso because his work was uniquely his, and because he lived into his 90s, he was a prolifically productive artist throughout his entire life. Painting, drawings, sculpture, statues, whimsical metal crafter. I believe that he also did illustrations for books. I do not believe that any artist comes close to the sheer volume of his lifetime as an artist.

people ask the question about "most famous" all the time... most famous for what? making the most money, being written about the most? what? being the "most famous" is as ridiculous as being the "sexiest man alive" and having your grinning idiot face on the front of a magazine. There is no truth to it just a well to sell more mags... Who is it that determines what most famous means to you, why you of course ... if to you the corvette is the most famous car in the world then that is what it is because "most famous" exists only in your mind unless of course you wish to have someone else make up your mind for you then you can just read the tabloids and accept whatever they say as gospel, unless there is a world wide century long poll that every person on the globe answers all the 250,000 questions to nothing will ever be certified as "most famous"

You know an artist is really famous when children are aware of them. Most fourth grade students know da Vinci, Van Gough, Michaelangelo, and Picasso.

While all of the artists named were and/or are famous to many art lovers they do not meet the operative word in your question.
The operative word is MOST famous.
Famous, in my opinion would mean which one is known for their art by the MOST people. I have no way to prove my answer but I feel certain it is accurate and addresses the question you ask.
My answer is not singular:
Cavemen are historically the MOST famous artists.

Not that they are my favorite -- but da vinci, Picasso and Van Gogh rank up pretty high in the common knowledge factor to non artists.
