My windows mediaplayer can't play a video of .dat. which one codecs or incoders I would need to install so that I can enjoy .dat videos too ...

.dat is not a video or audio file, its usually just a data file for something else.

.dat i believe is short for Data as in a data file and cannot be played. If its a disc image you would need to have a software like Alcohol 100%, Virtual Daemon or any other Virtual CD that can open such file. then explore it or burn it on a CD. Then you be able to watch it... if it really does contain a video file that is
