" Original Equipment Manufacturer (frequently abbreviated "OEM")"
Say your computer is Dell, it should come with back up disks. These are OEM disk, meaning they can only work for backing up that Dell system or other Dell systems. But one thing you can do, If possible make sure you have a boot disk made from your system. You can locate this information in "Create System Boot Disk"
So if you have an OEM CD and its made by Dell etc. The it will only work for Dell computers etc.

OEM= original equipment manufacturer. They produce the equipment ,such as hard drives, for other companies to install in their machines. It is also available to the public to buy but usually means it comes with no instructions or installation disks.Though these can normally be downloaded from the internet

You can use an OEM version of windows with any type of PC.
The only difference from the standard version is that it is only supposed to be sold with a major piece of hardware such as a processor or motherboard.

depends on the computer, I have a compac desktop (it came with a restore disk), well, the disk got scratched- rendering it unuseable.I had to get a new winxp disk, repartition & reformat the harddrive......it's a crap-shoot at best...but this works for me.
I can tell you for sure, I mistakenly put my laptop restore disk in the desktop to restore it.......I got a blue screen that in a nutshell told me that I was out of my mind!!!! Good Luck!

when you say, "revamp", are you talking about upgrading?
if, your answer is , "yes', then oem is "not" for you, "unless", you have made multiple hardware changes, and upgrades.
oem, is used by manufacturers, and computer refurbishers.
