Get a powered UHF/VHF antenna. If you get plain old rabbit ears, you will get channels but not as many. The powered antenna will plug into an electrical outlet and it will amplify the signals that it receives so that you will get more channels and they will not be as grainy as they would be with a non-powered antenna. There are many different models ranging in price from 5 to 75 dollars. The more expensive ones get high definition off air signals also. Only get one of those if you have a High Def TV.

We don't have cable. The others are correct. Just go to Walmart (or any discount store) and buy a cheap pair of rabbit ears (indoor antenna). They can be a pain in the butt when trying to tune in a station, but at least you'll be able to get local stations.
Parrotsarenoisy is correct too. When we lived in Alabama, we couldn't get the local station, even with our rabbit ears.

I refuse to pay for cable or satellite.

I have antenna on the roof and an amp (I wouldn't need the amp if I had gone to the first link bellow first) and I get most of my local channels pretty good. Go to the first link to find the right size antenna for your area. I would go one higher than is suggested so you wont have to buy an amp or wonder if your doing it wrong. The third link has alot of info on antennas, maybe too much.

I then decided to buy an ATSC receiver and hook it up. I now get more than 30 digital channels for free. If your gonna go with an antenna you should seriously think about getting an ATSC set top box. Mine is a US Digital DB-2010, I bought it off of ebay for $90 and it works with my regular TV.

All regular TV signals in the US will switch to Digital by Feb. 17th, 2009. The seconad link will explain that in more detail. Remember to look for things having an ATSC tuner in them when you go to buy your next TV, VCR, etc.... I have read on somones blog that all TV devices that receive TV signal are supposed to have them by Fall 2007.

Buy some rabbit ears, I think that's what they still call them? You can also go to radio shack or best buy and get a plug in anntenna. My daughter has the same problem. Your channels will be limitted though.
