I have a friend I've known since first grade who hold her breath/ I'm not talking about in the shower or while swimming (she's a lifeguard), but randomly during class and even like at tables in restaurants. Is it unsafe for her to be doing this? I'm concerned there may be some underlying thing going on like epilepsy. I don't want to confront her about it seeing as she does it subtly and it doesn't cause any obvious problems.

Any ideas?

She does it in and out of the water...that's why I'm worried...it seems unnatural to hold your breath while in a Government and Economics class. If it was just in the water or just during in-service (I train with her since we are both lifeguards) then I wouldn't be worried but it is all the time.

No, it's fine. Some people are able hold their breath longer though.

Your friend will not get epilepsy from holding her breath.

The cause of an individual's epilepsy can be divided into two categories: symptomatic and idiopathic. Symptomatic epilepsies originate due to some structural or metabolic abnormality in the brain. This may be the result of:

* genetic conditions such as tuberous sclerosis and ring chromosome 20 syndrome
* complications during pregnancy or birth
* stroke
* head injury
* neurosurgical operations
* bacterial or viral encephalitis
* parasitical infection
* alcohol

It's fine as long as she doesn't hold it for to long. Alot of people do that. Mostly life guards they practice holding there breath when there in the water. You should confront her and tell her that you worried about her and see what she tells you if shes your real friend she won't get mad at you and she'll tell you why she does it and that it doesn't hurt her. Then you might feel better.

I have heard of children who have held their breath if they get hurt or mad and pass out. Their involuntary muscles take over that control breathing and they don't die. It sounds like a problem if an that an adult would do this and she needs to talk to her doctor. Ask her why she does this, is it training for her life guard job, or does she have a more serious underlying problem? It doesn't sound normal to me.

Ignore it.....this goes for parents who have kids that have tantrums and hold their breath for attention....let them hold their breath, make sure that there's nothing in the immediate vicinity that they can get hurt on, and just walk away...after they pass out and hit the floor - they'lll start breathing again.....nature...got to love it!

why is she doing this is it a bad habit or what. It probably won't do her any harm, but it seems like a phobia for her.
