The E900 is a good camera. Here's an in-depth review: http://www.steves-digicams.com/2005_reviews/e900_pg5.html
The S5600 (July 2005) and the S6500 (July 2006) are both 'SLR-like'. They are still point & shoot cameras. If you want a real digital SLR, your budget options are the Pentax K100D/ K110D, the Nikon D50/ D40 (available in December), and the Olympus E500. Of these, I recommend the Nikon D50 (great camera, great value for money, great upgrade path).
For more information on all of those models, you can find reviews at the same site: http://www.steves-digicams.com/hardware_reviews.html and here http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/default.asp?view=alpha

Your choice of the E900 is an excellent one. Before buying a camera make doubly sure you want just a point and shoot camera. For if you find that you really want to get involved with photography then you should be buying another another TYPE of camera namely a digital SLR(single lens reflex) which You have control over and can change lenses.

Beside Fuji Finepix, Canon PowerShot A530 is a good choice. Not too expensive($140) and have 5M Pixel resolution which is much more than suffice for general purpose, use. You will be able to use it like a beginner as well as a pro.
If you have more money (Around $40 difference) then you can buy Canon PowerShot A540, which is 6M pix and gives you more control and a bigger LCD panel to View pics.

Niiice! I have a Fuji Finepix and I love it.

For what it's worth though, if you're serious about photography then it's worth buying a cheap non-digital SLR so that you can learn about apertures, etc.

Take a class, if you can find one in your area. Ask a photographer in your area what he suggests for training. I have a Fuji FinePix and I really like it. Warning, it eats batteries like potato chips. I had to buy rechargable to keep up with it. My son has a Kodak that has a built-in charger, this would be a better option. Photography is AWESOME! Have FUN!
