Hello! I've always wanted a Chihuahua, and with recent changes in my life, need/want a companion. My problem is that I live in a small apartment and work the "night" shift - from 7pm till 3am. This means I wake up around 2pm, have 4 hours then leave for work at 6pm, get home around 3:30am, then have 2.5 more hours of awake time and go to sleep at 6am.

Is this enough time for/fair to a dog? I can wake up and play with it/love it/walk it, but of course I also have to do regular stuff (shower/food/etc). Then leave it alone to go to work, and the upstairs neighbors are home making noise walking/running/dropping things. Then I can play with it more when I get home, but then it's time for bed.

Will it be ok with this? I don't want it to be upset or get bored or go crazy because it's alone and the noise upstairs. My situation unfortunately, isn't changing anytime soon. I love pets, and if I get one, I will definately pick up a training course to do it right! What do you think?

I grew up having cats for pets (2), and then lived with a roommate who had 2 cats for a few years as well, so I've been around alot of cats. Cats are great and I love them, but I don't want another cat. It's not that I'm sick of them or anything, it's just that I've had cats in the past, but always wanted a chihuahua, but wasn't allowed to get one.

I have the same amount of time as any other single adult that works, it's just that my time is broken up into two segments (before work and after work), where as other people have pretty much all of their time in one shot (after work). Aren't other dogs left alone for the same amount of time? (I mean, their owners have to work and sleep too, right?) Wouldn't the dog basically adapt to my schedule??? I don't want *it* to be bored, but then again, I don't want *me* to be bored either! :) It's not like it would have a horrible home, I'd love it lots and lots. :) Do you really think this is not workable at all? :(

Chihuahua's size makes it a wonderful dog for people who live in small city apartments. The breed is very hardy and adaptable, but it must live inside a home or an apartment, the Chihuahua should not live outside. Chihuahuas are good travelers and can easily go anywhere with their owners. so yes. But you would need someone there for the 1st few months because all puppies are like that.

Chihuhua's are good in small apartment, we had ours in a very small one ( we use to just put him out the window to go to the washroom ). Chihuahua's are very needy, the love attention and crave it, they can be alone at long stretches of time ( not as pupies though ) but on a consistent basises i advise against your owning one at the time being.

I wouldn't get a dog at this time. You could probably get a cat instead. They will love you just as much as a dog would and need as much attention, love and care as a dog.
