I am an Indian and can tell you that for a country 1/3rd the size of USA there is a lot of different types of cuisine in India.
Like a lot of people here mention that it is Dal and Roti (chapati) or Dal and rice but it is not so simple. Rice is staple for most people in the plains and south, but chapati is taken in the north, as that is a common crop. Also is also taken by many these days as it is considered healthier.
Similarly Dal or lentils are taken in almost all Indian homes - there are as many as 10-12 common varieties and they are prepared in differnet ways in north and south, east and west.
Vegetables are considered a must in every Indian home - as curries, as dry preparations and even added to dals sometimes! The curries you get in restaurants are not what one prepares at home - we prepare something more simple and less oily. We use seasonal vegetables - sometimes even ones that no restaurant may dare to serve- like veggies called tinda and kunduru!! In some dishes in certain areas, even a bit of sugar is added to curries to get the balanced taste.
Meat and fish are not taken by all Indians - depending on caste and religion. However all along India's coastal region sea-food/ fish eaters are found in plenty than in the interiors.
So every region you go to in India - Punjab, Bengal, Maharashtra, Goa, Gujarat or Madras - each and every dish will tatse different - I promise you!

You have already been given some good suggestions that get the thumbs up from me, but there are a few things extra I can suggest that made my trip to Singapore that little bit more special 1. Fountain of Wealth - near Suntec City shopping complex, it is the world's only inverted water fountain (and a bloody big one too!) There is a daily light/laser show at 8pm I think, and for a period, they turn the fountain off so you can walk underneath it - walk round it three times and it brings you good fortune apparently! 2. Singapore Duck Tours ! An amphibian vehicle will pick you up from Suntec, and take you on a brilliant guided land tour of the city before racing down straight into the water and taking you on a water tour of the main bay, Marina Bay - fantastic ! 3. The Garlic restaurant - (if you like garlic!) the ice cream included ! If not to your taste, opposite is the chocolate bar - from a hot chocolate to chocolate liquors !! And geat coffees too ! Have a great time - Malaysia is just as exciting !

India is big ethnic country people here eat so many variety of food that no one can count. Every state/region has so many varieties of food that one will take years to try each of such variety. India is not like USA that every tom **** n harry is eating burger all the time. Even in a simple roti we have so many variety that American burgers stand nowhere. In Chandni Chowk (Delhi) there is a special Paratha wali gaali were there is a shop of paratha making 100 different types of parathas. Most of the people in India eat rice and now for its varieties from simple boiled to fried to palao to biryani to kheer to.......etc. There is no stopping. But one thing which a Indian use in their cooking is salt and spices those very spices which attracted Europeans to India . For people around the world Indian dishes are only curries but our dishes are more then simply curries. Tandoori chicken it self has large varieties ranging from Afghani, Pishory, Hyderabadi to Kashmiri to awadi ......etc . Indian dishes are so exotic that you can not remain away from any one them vegetarian or non vegetarian Whether kaddi , rajma or shami- kabab, mutton korma, or nargasi kofta name any you'll get it only here......!!!!

Rotis - Mix wheat flour 1 cup with plain flour 1 cup. Add 1tsp salt and mix well. Add 1 cup warm water and 1 tablespoon oil. Knead for 5 to 7 minutes till springy to touch. Rest the dough for 10 minutes. Roll into rounds with a rolling pin. Fry on a dry pan (no oil) till little bubbles appear. They flip over and wait for bigger bubbles. When puffed take it off the heat. Eat with Dhal (lentils). Find a recipe on the net. This is the most commonly eaten meal in India. Simple and healthy and cheap too
