Horomones, cheap drugs, anything that will make the animals be as big as they can be without costing much. Some websites I would go to are:
peta.org
peta2.com (if you're between 13 and 24)
And some books I liked were:
May all Be Fed: Diet for a New World
The Food Revolution
(Both by John Robbins)

Factory farmed animals (the major food source in the US) ingest pesticides, antibiotics and hormones.
Once they are slaughtered, the meat is treated with various chemicals, colorants and additivesto keep it from rotting on the way to your neighborhood grocery.
A LOT goes into processed foods, especially animal-derived.

From growing up on a beef cattle farm, I know that cows are injected with lots of hormones, to supposedly help them grow larger. When beef sells per pound, this helps the farmer get more money per cow. I know this for certain, but not sure about any other chemicals.

Depends where you live, here in the UK and other EU countries, it is illegal to sell meat with any more than a tiny amount of hormones and antibiotics, etc, in it die to health concerns.
