Women are usually affected because they have a short urethra than men and it is situated close to their anus. Hence women and girls must dry themselves from front to the back, towards the anus - not the other way around - to avoid leading bacteria from their intestines into the urethra.
Males also can get cystitis particularly those with a catheter or an enlarged prostate. Cystitis-like symptoms among young sexually active men can be attributed to venereal diseases.

Cystitis is a bacterial infection of the bladder or lower urinary tract. The condition primarily affects women, but can affect either sex and all age groups.
Signs and tests:-
Urinalysis commonly shows white blood cells (WBCs) or red blood cells (RBCs).
Urine culture (clean catch) or catheterized urine specimen may be done to find out what kind of bacteria is causing the infection and to determine the appropriate antibiotic for treatment.
Please see the webpages for more details on Cystitis.

Yep, im afraid they can. It will be uncomfortable and burn or sting when you pee. Also you will find that you feel like you need to pee nearly all the time and when you go only a dribble will come out. My friend had it and was in a lot of discomfort with it. Get it checked out cus it can get serious if not treated and do not have sex until its sorted cus you will end up passing it on. Drinking Cranberry juice is supposed to be very good if you have it. Try to remember to wear a condom if you are sleeping with a new partner and dont know where they have been.

I wouldnt put it past anyone to get anything no matter what modern medicine/science says...this is just the nature of the beast...science has been wrong before and will continue to do so because for the most part no one or nothing is perfect...
