I have smoked for years, but recently have cut it down to just a couiple smokes a week. However, during the last few years I really exagerated and smoked a lot. If so, how long does it take...

Of course, but it takes years for your lung to return back to normal, but not fully. It starts just by quitting completely, but it is quite hard to do. Some of the damage is permanent though, and it would have been better if you hadn't even started smoking.

The body is an amazing thing. There is information saying that when you quit smoking, your body starts to return more to normal.

However, there is a point where the damage isn't repairable. I don't know how much damage you've done to your lungs. The nice thing about the body is that it's amazing in some areas of self repair. I know that for nerve damage, sometimes the nerves will grow back, however it's a slow process.

I doubt that the lungs will grow back what's damaged, but sacks will probably heal up and some of the stuff clogging up the lungs will be coughed out.

All I can say is to check with your Dr. on this.

Your lungs will get better if you quit smoking but just how long that will take depends on how much damage has been done to them. Since you are easily out of breathe it sounds like you could be heading down the road towards emphysema so quit smoking and get your lungs back in shape.

Hi,

Great post! Quitting smoking was the hardest thing I've ever done in my life, and I thought I wasn't addicted!

Here's what I tried before finding success: hypnosis, those fake cigaretts, the nicotine patch, and group therapy....none worked.

I finally tried this HERBAL patch I bought 6 months ago on the net. They claim a 97% success rate. Well, it worked! They had a sweet deal which was a free 10 day trial for only $3.95 including shipping (it's regularly $53 for 10 days)!!

I don't know if they still have that deal, but it's worth a try.

Good Luck
btw..the direct answer to your question is it takes the lungs 7 years per pack a day. so if you smoke 2 packs a day, it will take 14 years for your lungs to heal.

Congrats on quiting!! Yay, does the happy dance 4 ya. ok.. well it will get better since you are not putting that stuff on it every minute of the day, but it will probably never be the same as in be4 you started. You might be able to breathe better and that's great, but you may or may not have a slight cough from yrs of smoking. As long as you do not smoke anymore, it should not get worse unless something happened during the smoking days, but there have been a lot of people who have stopped smoking and lived a really healthy non smoking life, so I think you will be one of them too. Hope this helps, and GL

No, the lungs are an organ that do not regenerate. Thats why it is best to never start smoking. Some side effects of smokeing may clear up a little but any damage is there to stay.

Almost immediately after you stop smoking, your lungs will begin to once again function much better. After about 6 months, they will be dramatically better. Good Luck!!!!!!
