Soy is nowhere near as bad as animal products! Most vegheads aren't aware that the meat and dairy industries have started sponsoring anti-soy 'research' in a desperate attempt to stop they're market share (go look at peta.com for example), the BS about estrogen in soy *all* came from these clown and you'll all start hearing about 'poisonous' lectins from soy also (search the questions here for lectins).
As to non-soy replacements? "milk" can be made from most grains and nuts and that leads to ice cream etc! Gluten from wheat etc makes good 'meat' analogs and most grains can be used to make tempeh. And while tofu is originally a soya bean based product I have 'screwed around' with tofu made from other beans (corn&black bean is *really* weird!).

Soy is not bad for you. It contains valuable antioxidants that can help protect the body and ease the symptoms of the menopause. Some studies have shown that it MAY contain harmful ingredients when eaten in large amounts (much more than a vegan would consume).
But so does burnt foods, coca cola and fish if you believe the hype.
Intensive farming of soya beans does damage the environment and a lot of land has been lost to soy crops.
If a vegan decided to stop drinking soy milk there are also vegan "dairy products" made from rice and oats.

I don't know where you read such nonsense, but throw that magazine in the trash where it belongs. The article was either written by an ignorant person who got paid well to write it, or the beef producers. Soy is very healthy. It can be used as a filler, but its a healthy filler. If soy is cooked in aluminum pans, so is the rest of the food. Why would anyone change pans? If they are using aluminum for one thing, they use it for another. Soy is a legume, a bean. It doesn't contain estrogen. It is recommended for women who are experiencing symptoms (of) menopause, as it helps CONTROL the imbalance of fluctuating hormones. Many babies are allergic to cows milk, (cows milk is for calves), and so drink a milk substitute made with soy milk. Aluminum has been suspected as a contributing factor in Alzheimer's, but is not, at this time proven. Either way, it has zero to do with soy products. Don't believe everything you read at first glance. Good luck.

I never heard that soy was bad for you. In what way is it bad? I eat tofu and drink soy milk all of the time- I am not vegan or vegetarian- My system just does not get along with milk and I do not care for its taste

Overall soy is not bad for you, but there is somethings you have to watch out for. Soy on the market is an 87% GMO (genetically modified organism), and carries a Brazilian nut gene to make it more hardier to grow. Soy protein isolate, found in most processed vegan products, is usually a GMO (unless it says that it isn't, because here in America they don't have to state it on the label). Try to buy Organic and you won't have to worry about the GMO soy.
The other thing for vegans is not to put all your protein needs on soy. Do not have soy milk in the morning, tofu for lunch, and then edame for dinner. Have a varied diet of legumes, not just soybeans, and grains (rice, wheat, spelt). If you want high protein grains I would recommend quinoa, amaranth, and millet.
Soy is found in alot of processed vegetarian/vegan foods, but there is other things on the market. Milks for instance can be made from almonds, oats, hazelnuts, and rice. And from these milks, ice cream can be made: rice milk is the biggest on the market with Rice Dream and Good Karma.
Meatless products can be made from wheat gluten as in a Field Roast. Even Tofurky is not all tofu, but a mixture of tofu and wheat gluten. Nut loafs are also on the market for vegans (walnuts are very popular).
When you try to be a vegetarian/vegan, you will find many things to eat! The vegetarian market is rapidly expanding and becoming quite a convience to try vegetarianism.

who told soy was bad for you? Never heard that. I've always heard it was actually better for you then milk from a cow. Because now days they pump them full of steriods so the milk comes out with all this bacteria so then they have to clean it and blah, blah, blah. Anyway I've heard all my life that soy was good for your body just never heard anything bad so donno. But to answer your question. Vegans drink oat milk, rice milk and stuff. Ya know everything we eat isn't made of soy. Because there is a whole world of wonderful veggies. Though when it comes to milk, ice-cream and tofu I prefer soy. Off the top of my head can't really think of any other meatless products. But they do have rice milk and rice milk ice-cream.

First of all, soy is not bad. It is only problematic when it is excessive and generally only causes issues for men. However, rice milk as well as coconut milk is a substitute for soy milk. Most vegetarians I know drink nonfat or lowfat milks - the no milk rule applies mostly to folks with vegan (not vegetarian) diets.

it's bad for you if you have an allergy to it..i don't drink it 'cause of the "creaminess" i can't stand anything creamy in my mouth,yuck! but others in my house guzzle it down like water, i cook with it at times, but now my allergy to soy is elevating,as my allergy to fish &wheat has. some ppl who don't like vegetarians/vegans put out false stories about soy. if you have an allergy,you just have an allergy that does'nt mean that something is(wholley bad for everyone).nut milks are what some ppl drink too.
i love tofu!what does a vegan like me drink? whiskey,beer(screw the grain allergy).espresso,green tea.water.

unfermented soy is bad for,such as soymilk.But tofu is fermented,as well as tempeh.Mock meats usually aren't fermented.There is rice milk and almond milk to replace soy milk.Alittle bit of soy here and there is okay,but consuming alot can be bad.
