The kidneys are the major excretory organ of the body. Two of the excretory substances are blood urea nitrogen and creatinine. These to are tested in what we call the RFT (Renal Function Test). An elevated value for these substances will indicate renal dysfunction. BUN (blood ureas nitrogen) is also elevated in other disorders like burns, etc, so creatinine is a more specific test for the kidneys. Sometimes BUA (blood uric acid) is simultaneously done because it is also a waste product excreted by the kidneys. Although it is not entirely specific for the kidneys, there are instances that urolithiasis occurs. Stones (uric acid) in the kidneys.
You could also perform routine urinalysis , a laboratory examination of your urine specimen. This will determine whether you have lower or upper urinary tract infection, but this is not a test for the kidney's excretory and reabsorption "functions" .

The simple and best way to find how effective the kidney is functioning is to do the following test:
1.Drink 8-10 glasses of water after meals.
2.Empty the bladder in the morning and observe its colour and odour .The colour should be transparent. The odour should not be stingent.
3.Measure the total outlet of water. It should be app same as the intake.
4.If all the above are positive the kidney may well be functioning fine.
There are other tests to find the efficiency of kidneys like Creatine Test and Uric Acid Test . Ultrasound Test is another modality to detect any abnormalities in Kidneys like Stones etc.
