He really needs to be seen by a vet. If it is spinal injury, it has a much better chance of being successfully treated, if treatment begins early

He is an old pup and may have arthritis, or a spinal injury that is causing some weakness. With all due respect to a previous person who answered---not everyone can afford to go to the vet for diagnosis, and if you're a novice pet owner many times there is a simple solution that someone here can give you. I'm sure most people ask a question here first then move on to their vet.

Take him to the vet right away. We had an Akita whose tail went limp and then the weakness went forward through his hind legs. He had a spinal paralysis. There are lots of possibilities for your dog's problem. Some are treatable. This does not sound like arthritis to me more like a neurological problem. Dogs can have strokes, too. It could be a viral or other kind of infection.
You can use a towel folded the long way as a sling under the dog's belly to hold it up and help it relieve itself until you get treatment.

Look on your pet very good,as it may have a tick embedded on it somwhere,as my little Yorkie did this one time and acted like he was parallized.I looked on him and found a tick, removed the tick and within seconds he could stand and walk.Vet said that some dogs have a higher resistance to the toxin of ticks, but some don't have any resistance and if I hadn't removed the tick my dogs resporatory system would have shut down and it would have died.If this isn't the problem, your pet could have a kidney problem and a vet would be your best source of communication about this,as it would require meds to get it better.

I'm not sure what a bichon is?? your dog is pretty old if he is a larger breed! life span depends on size! it just may be old age, but can also be something else! the only way you will know for sure is to take him to the vet.! I'm so sorry to hear this and i wish i could be more helpful!!

I would take him to the vet. It might be arthritis or old age. My dog could barely stand up, and I just had to put him down, because he was full of arthritis and he had a hard time breathing, and he was almost deaf. It was hard to do, but it was for the best. Just don't let your dog suffer, that's the worst thing you can do.

12 years old is not old for a Bichon. Please take him to a vet as soon as you can. Give your dear fluff a hug. There is nothing like a sweet Bichon. He's like a little person in a fur coat I always say!!

There are so many things it could be. But even on the internet it is not legal to diagnose a condition without a license and an exam. Take him to a vet and have a professional look at him.

Did he jump off a bed or couch? If he jumped down off a high place he could have damaged his spine. This is not uncommon in small dogs. It could be something as simple as steroid injections and medications or it could be far more serious. Time is of the essence. CALL YOUR VET ASAP!
