A murmur is caused by abnormal blood flow over a valve. Some murmurs are just sounds without consequence. If there is an abnormal valve, it may require the heart to work harder, and that will cause the heart to enlarge.

My mom had a heart murmur and an enlarged heart. Her murmur was caused by aortic stenosis. She was born with a congenital heart defect. She had a bicuspid valve instead of the normal tricuspid valve most people have. The deformed valve caused blood to backwash into her heart. Since the blood never fully passed through the heart it backed up causing the heart to swell and become enlarged. This is not the case with all murmurs though. There are other types of murmurs that are not serious. The best bet is to talk with your cardiologist to find out the cause of your murmur and whether it is contributing to an enlarged heart. Good luck.

No these are different things, however they can be related as in the long term a murmur can lead to an enlarged heart. A murmur is a sound that your doctor can hear when blood flows in the wrong direction through a heart valve. Heart valves (you have 4 in your heart) are designed to prevent blood from flowing backward in the heart. It can happen that one of this valve leaks and allows blood to flow in the wrong direction generation a distinctive noise called a murmur. In the long term and if the leak is severe, your heart has to pump more than usual because it must compensate for the leak. Like any other muscle, because your heart muscle has to do some extra work, it will enlarged hence the enlarged heart

A murmur cannot 'cause' an enlarged heart. Actually , both murmur and enlarged heart may be part of one disease. Murmur usually appears first and enlargement of heart takes time. Normal blood flow in heart is very smooth and streamlined like that of a slow moving river. So it is not heard with stethoscope. Murmur is heard when flow of blood in heart becomes turbulent like that of a river rushing down a mountain. so it makes sound and can be heard as a murmur. The condition that causes turbulent blood flow in heart may also cause enlarged heart.

A murmur is caused when a valve in the heart doesn't adequately push blood from one chamber to another. This is called regurgitation. Lots of people have valve regurge, specifically mitral valve regurgitation. The work from the lagging valve can over time lead to enlargement of the heart. Just like working your biceps excessively creates bigger arms!
