I praise you for caring about the innocent animals that day in and day out are brudally tortured and murdered just so one can have a greesy fatty burger that all it is good for is a heart attack.

My family is also big meat eatters (speaking of my extended family not my mother) and they all laughed when I said that I was going to be vegetarian. My mother was the only one behind me. My favorite aunt who I can count on for anything and is always there for me just had the whole "why would you want to do that?" confused look on her face. Everyone else was just like whatever and knew I couldnt do it, and my grandma told me it was a fase that I would get over. Her comment espically was really hurtful.

I was 16 when I first decided to go vegetarian. It was a very hard transition, It took me about 3 times to actually become full vegetarian. I would go weeks without eatting meat and then I would have like a piece of chicken just out of no where. I felt really horrible after and then I would go another say 6 months. The last time I had meat was about 10 months ago and I was just totally disgusted with it. I had the Chicken Rollup from Applebees which used to be one of my favorite dishes. I was totally disgusted and got really sick after eatting it. That really turned me off and I said that theres no way or reason I would ever want to eat it ever again. Not only that I had a huge feeling of guilt. I am now 18 and have been a vegetarian for about a year. I plan to raise my future children vegetarian and really enjoy the help benefits that also come along. I have never felt more healthy in my entire life.

I know I'm pretty much thorwing out useless information but I just want to let you know that it will be hard. Start out slowly. If you think your mother will not support you and take your seriously, prove her wrong. Ask her if she can buy you some boca meatless product, or morning star. It's not the most healthy food in the world but its a helpful when starting out. The night your family has burgers cook yourself a boca burger. Thow on some cheese lettuce tomato onion, whatever you have on a normal burger, and chances are you will love it almost as much as a regular one, and an animals life wasnt taken in the making of it. Those will be very helpful and a good way to prove to your mother that you are serious. Make sure you eat lots of vegetables, fruits, protein (in beans, peanut butter) yogurts. Alot think that being a vegetarian is not healthy becuase you are cutting out animal protein, but its a known fact that if you do it right, most vegetarians are way more healthy eatters then those who eat meat.

Give it time, it will be hard and I'm sure there will be times you'll crave a burger or some fried chicken. Just keep in mind all that goes into your meat. That cute little animal that against it's will gave its life. Not to mention all the health benefits.

If you have not already, check out some of these sites. They'll be helpful.

You can order free materials from Peta2.com and they will send you lots of information. Use this information to tell your mother why you want to be a vegeterian, or a vegan, or a partial vegetarian. All read the book Fast Food Nation by Eric Schlosser and you'll find even more detailed (and gruesome) reasons why being a vegetarian is a good idea. Tell your mom you respect her and all the hard work she puts into dinner, but that you'd like to eat a little healthier and start watching what eat. Good luck with everything!

Just tell your mom and give her some reasons why you want to be a vegetarian. When she serves you dinner eat everything except the meat and pretty soon she will just accept it and won't think anything about it. I am the only vegetarian in my family, I cook 2 seperate meals and I don't mind at all. I also stand behind PETA !

Did the same thing when I wanted to be vegetarian. I was extremly nervous and just couldn't figure out a way to tell her. So I sat her at the kitchen table and explained all my opinions. Everything about how they treat them inhumanly, how it is just plain gross to eat another living thing with feelings. How I couldn't bring myself to eat another carcass laying on the kitchen table. All my feelings came flooding out. So afterward she took it all in and said ."Okay." She told me as long as I ate healthy and I was doing it for the right reasons. She would not try and stop me from doing something I felt so passionate about. So now I'm am a vegan four years later and she is still okay. We go shopping for my meals and once in a while she will drink my soymilk or eat my vegan meat products. I can't tell you how your mom will react, all I can do is to try and tell her the truth first.

If I were you I would keep it to myself and just eat what you want. I have been a vegetarian for about 15 or so years and people make such a big deal about it sometimes, it's annoying. My advice, don't talk about it, just eat what you want, veggies if she makes any at dinner, and make your own if not. You go, veggie is kind!

Just makes sure you get some books on nutrition from a health food store to make sure you all all the nutrients you need.

Aveline Kushi's book about Macrobiotic cooking is a wonderful book, and it's not as uh, dull as it sounds. She explains the different properities of food, her history etc. It is a great book.

And John Robbin's books Diet for a New America turned me, It is about the cruelty of factory farms etc. He gave up the "Basking Robbins" family fortune to try and educate people.

I think you just gotta tell her youre gonna be a veggie, and then refuse to eat meat there onwards. If theres no food for you, skip a meal. Your mum will NOT want you starving!
Otherwise, I think youre a very good 14yr old for wanting to and enjoying cooking. She should be proud!

If you dont mind cooking your own meals than thats what I would do. My mom is actually really cool about me being a veggie and I cook alot of my own meals as well. They best way to prove to her you can do it, is just do it. Good luck.

Go through the link listed below with her to help allay fears she may have. The second link has lots of useful books to help you with your improved dietary choices. When they tell you "yur gonna die if you don't eat no meat man" let them know you got this information from a grampa that went 'veghead' at age 8!

Good luck!
