It is possible for your lungs to produce mucus in response to an unwanted object in the airway. This may create pain, coughing, shortness of breath.

If you were to get food into your lungs, you would be coughing hysterically and would most definitely notice. Rarely will something in the lungs result in little (mucus) to no symptoms.
