My mom has had this crazy cough for weeks and it won't go away. She's tried Mucinix DM, Robitusin DM, Ricola, NyQuil, DayQuil, Theraflu, Alka Seltzer for cough, some weird cough syrup that was prescribed to me by Army doctors, horehound candy (whatever that is)...but nothing has helped.

Do y'all have any idea of what might help my poor mother?

The best thing is the Mucinex. BUT - there's a catch with Mucinex. You HAVE to drink a lot of water for it to work. The water helps it to thin the mucous. If the cough has been hanging on for that long she might want to go see the doc, though. If she still has some Mucinex, have her take it - and drink at least 8 8-oz. glasses of water a day while she takes it. It'll thin the mucous out and make it break up - she might cough still, but she'll be coughing up the congestion and eventually it'll stop. The purpose of the cough is to get that stuff out of her. Mucinex helps loosen it up so she can do that. It just doesn't work if she doesn't drink enough water, that's all.

I do take medicine from time to time, but the way for your mom to beat her cough is simple. Tell her to drink hot green tea with a tablespoon of honey and juice from one lemon wedge. Honey is a cure all, lemon has the highest concentrate of vitamin C, and tea will help her relax so that the other two can work properly. Tell her to drink this twice a day. If after 1 week the coughing does not start to subside, tell her to go to the doctor and have some x-rays.

Your other responders said it best tea and honey until you can get to a doctor give her a thorough exam and take her seriously.

There is another temporary thing its cooky ,but it has worked for me. It is based on Chinese medicine. When she is coughing Have your mother give you her hand. Place your thumb and middle finger on either side of the meaty portion of her hand between her thumb and ring finger . Place your Middle finger on palm side//thumb on back of hand side and press firmly but not too hard. Almost massaging area with your fingers. She can do this for herself as well. It stops coughing fits. This does not address the underlying illness though. Ok, before you all tell me how much you hate this answer just know that I know you will all be trying it sooner or later.

Vaporizer, Vicks menthol Rub. Water, Hot chicken noodle soup.

Maybe its Asthma and shes screwing up her system with the wrong meds.

She should be seeing a Dr. soon, if coughing continued more than the over the counter medication was meant to be used up by date. Like 3 days if coughing persists without improvement.

Get her to try Delsym DM. It's a pretty powerful cough syrup. It suppresses coughs for up to 12 hours and it worked for me when I had a really bad cold!

Take Mom to the doctor. A cough should not go on that long and something is seriously wrong.

Last time I had a coughing fit, I called our hospital nurse, and she said to keep my head well elevated (like about three pillows or more) and to keep myself hydrated. She also recommened I use a humidifier at home. It did work! Good luck!

well of course, your mother should see a doctor. because it could be somthing more serious than she thinks like whooping cough or a bad respiratory infection.

Hope she sees a doctor,
Deirdre

You have to live with it. My mom coughed alot, too. Just try to ignore it.

Is she a smoker? That could also be the case.
