Typically sake is served hot or cold depending on the season; hot during winter months and cold during the summer. Aside from that, it's just a matter of how you like it. I lived in Japan (Hamura-shi, Tokyo-to) for 2 years and I've had various sake served both hot and cold; most people who haven't aquired its taste prefer it hot, as it masks the taste of the alcohol. Being as I have been to Japan and lived there for 3 yrs, as one of the other respondants has said, In larger partthe warm or cold issues is all depnedant on the type of sake your drinking.
Cheaper bar brands are usually drank warm or on ice, but I have had about 50 types and some are sweet some are dry, sparkling and aged. Priced from 1800 yen to 30,000 yen for aged in a barrel for 4 yrs.
It is best to find a number, try small bottles and try them both ways, most restaurants have a selection to so be adventerous, but again there is no right or wrong way, expect maybe as a Japanese boilermaker like the one mentioned.

I don't know about the "in" way. I was told by a salesman in Tokyo that "real men" don't drink warm Sake.
In Korea they drink in warm in a large cup. This is the method that I prefer.
I think the "in" way to do anything is to do what you prefer. You'll get much more respect in the long run.

Either...my group is big on Sake Bombs right now. Where you place the chopsticks across your beer mug and balance the shot of Sake on them and then say 'sake sake sake bomb' at bomb you slam your fists on the table, the chopsticks fly, the shot falls and you down it...like an Irish car bomb. Of course you have to be in a restaurant that doesn't mind the rowdiness.

I like it cold very cold... it's like drinking hot alcohol.. the cold is refreshing. You have to have Sapporo beer to chase it down. At least that's the way I do it.

You're serious right?! "In" ...you're amusing...it's been the "in" thing in Japan for centuries. Just eat it and enjoy sake anyway you like it.
