Just told my pap was abnormal what happens now?

I was diagnosed with this about two years ago, after an abnormal pap. The doctor called me back in and did a biopsy. A large amount of my cells were abnormal and they did was was called a cryotherapy treatment (freezing of the cells). It was scary, becuase I thought I may have had cervical cancer. But the treatment basically sloughed off the abnormal cells so that healthy normal ones could grow back. I talked to a couple of people, and HPV is more common than you think.

Three months after the cryo treatment, my pap came back normal, and at my next annual pap, the HPV was gone.

AM: Here's the thing...just because your pap came back abnormal this does not mean you have a strain of HPV. Even having sex before a pap can cause abnormal cell changes. If your Dr. said abnormal, you need to ask which cells, how they have changed and why. There is a chart the Dr. can show you to determine what your concerns should/shouldn't be. Even if it was HPV, most strands go away on their own. The ones that do not can be treated early on to avoid Cervical Cancer. Your biggest concern at this point should be treatment if anything. Stay calm and see your Dr. again. Abnormal is not always HPV. I hope everything works out for you.

next they will do a biopsy and figure out what strain of the virus you are carrying. biopsy: they will remove a sample off of your cervix and test it. about 80% of hpv cases go away on there own. And about 90% of americans will catch it in there life. it can also in rare cases lead to genital warts or cervical cancer depending on what strain you have. Make sure to keep your follow up appointments, they are crucial in getting rid of it. In some cases they will "freeze" your cervix and kill all of the "bad" cells. after that the problem is usually taken care of, but again follow up appointments are the only way to know for sure. good luck, and don't stress too much over it, it could be the one that goes away on its own, the 80% chance is on your side more then likely. however make sure you use condoms until you know for sure.. also use condoms afterwards to make sure you aren't exposing yourself to other std's.. you can't always tell by looking if someone has something, there are those deadly viruses (hiv) that have no symptoms.. much luck

It stands for human papilloma virus (or similar) and there are around 100 different strains. Most of the strains are symptomless and harmless but some can lead to genital warts and some can cause changes in cervical cells which can (if women don't have regular smears) eventually lead to cervical cancer. Using barrier protection (ie condoms) reduces the risk of contracting it.
