I was put on 25mg of toprol. My heart rate was hovering at 100 and reached 150 when I was having a panic attack. I was having sinus tacycardia. I have been on toprol for about 9 days. My heart rate fluctuates there are times it is 75 and times it is 95. In the morning it is usually 95-105. Is this normal and how long does it take to see the full affect of these meds?

Effects are almost immediate. You may need to increase the dose or change your meds. Please consult your Dr.

When you start on a beta blocker, they give you a very low dose and titrate upwards until you obtain the desired result. A heart rate under 100 and over 60 is considered normal. Your doing pretty good I think. Toprol XL is an extended release tablet and you would see the peak result approx 12 hours after you swallow the pill. If you take metoprolol, which is the fast acting dose, you would feel a result within about an hour and thereafter.
I take Bisoprolol because it has a more direct effect on the heart and it starts working about 1 hour after I take it.

generally with my beta blockers it only takes about 30 mins to kick in.

I have been on Atenolol for high blood pressure for 10 yrs. Tell the Dr. you feel better on them. They will help with anxiety too. I take mine at night rather than daytime it helps me sleep; I would not suggest going on any ativan or anything, it works for awhile but when you go off it can cause anxiety to be worse than before.I dont know what the long term effects are but I havent had any problems.
