Blood pressure is the pressure of the blood in the arteries as the heart pumps it around the body. Blood pressure does not stay the same all the time – it changes to meet your body’s needs. If blood pressure remains high, it can lead to serious problems like a heart attack, stroke, heart failure or kidney disease.

Measuring blood pressure

Blood pressure is usually measured by an instrument called a sphygmomanometer. It is best to measure blood pressure when you are relaxed and sitting or lying down.

Blood pressure is recorded as two numbers, such as 120/80. The larger number indicates the pressure in the arteries as the heart squeezes out blood during each beat. It is called the systolic blood pressure. The lower number indicates the pressure as the heart relaxes before the next beat. It is called the diastolic blood pressure.

For the middle aged and aged person there may be increase in Systolic blood pressure. The general thumb rule for assessing the pressure is like this the diastolic should be 80 and systolic should be 80 + your age and in your case it should not exeed 80 + 57 = 137. If it goes beyond this your BP is on the higherside and you should have consultation with your physician and have medication to keep it within limits. You should restict you Sodium (Common salt) intake and do regular excercise ie. walking for atleast 45 minutes daily. This will show improvement.-

You can do the test at home. There are some quite cheap tools for that. It is important to do the test about at the same time of the day or, if you take the test at different times, compare morning with morning, noon with noon and evening with evening.
If you go to a routine check-up, the doctor will certainly measure your blood pressure. If it's too high, he may ask you to have an eye on it with such a tool.

get a blood pressure kit at any store, wal mart has a great selection, and take your B/P everyday at the same time, record it in a journal to see what your baseline is. B/P is usually higher in the morning, after waking up. so top number should be in the 120-230 range, and the bottom number in the 60-80 range, that is when the heart is at the restful moment, so you want to keep that one low.

Your blood pressure should run anywhere between the following:
upper number 120 - 140
lower number 60 -80

It can run a little higher or lower. Everyone is different. Ask your doctor what your normal pressure is and what it should be.
