Hey gal. You are very thoughtful to care for him.
Type I diabetes is very difficult, I know. I have Type II, but still have to follow a diet.
This is what my doctor told me.
Hypoglycemia is best treated by eating high protein foods, like cheese, meat (any kind).
So, actually that is also good for a diabetic as well. One of the things the diabetic has to watch for is too much carbohydrates and sugar content at one meal as you are aware of. However, the type I can eat high protein foods that are very healthy. If a type I or type II develops what we call a crash, the best thing is to have on hand peanut butter and cracker package or cheese and cracker packages and orange juice. You can also buy glucose tablets to help you both.
A new study has shown that Chili is a great dish for diabetics and I am so glad. I had noted that when I ate chili the night before, my blood sugar was usually lower and I never knew why. It is actually the chili powder in the chili (told to me by my R.N. daughter).
Anyway, just read labels and watch for foods that contain less sugar and lower carbs. There are good carbs and bad carbs. Bad carbs are empty carbs (like Coke or Pepsi, etc.) Good carbs are in fruit and fruit is allowed for diabetic, just not to the extreme.
I would suggest that you purchase a diabetic cook book to help you. Believe it or not, your conditions are similar. You need something sweet to raise you blood sugar and so do diabetics when their blood sugar drops way to low. You get shaking, confusion, sweating, and you should always carry a package of crackers or hard candy. You could do the same thing.
He is right about not worrying about it too much. He knows what he is supposed to have if he has been educated in that area. The hardest thing for a diabetic to do is stay away from good tasting candy, cookies, ice cream. A meal complete in protein, green vegetables, will be suitable for both of you. You both also need a snack between meals. Watch the cholesterol as well. You both need to stay under 200.
If he takes his regular dose of insulin, and watches his carb and sugar amounts, he will be okay. You are so, so thoughtful. I can't believe how some one could be so considerate as you are. He is lucky to have you. (keep him away from alcoholic beverages).
Please check on WebMed for info about hypoglycemic diets and diabetic diets and find a similar pattern to both and that will help you as well as him.
Best of luck and again, how thoughtful.

I'm a 45 year old woman and was recently diagnosed as being a borderline diabetic. My doctor prescribed some medication, but before filling it I decided to do some research on the internet which led me to the methods. After reading this ebook and applying the methods, my scepticism turned to 100% belief. I noticed that my energy levels increased significantly and I felt more rested in the morning, my symptoms started going away.
I am very happy to tell you that I have been feeling better than I have felt in years and my doctor informed me that he will be taking me off my prescriptions if I keep this up.
I recommend you use the Type 2 Diabetes Destroyer to naturally reverse your diabetes.
