Possibly it may be an increase in cases being diagnosed. the symptoms are easy to mistake, or not recognise or even ignore. A great many people are diagnosed in middle age. At that time it seems normal for eyesight to deteriorate and when glasses compensate then the cause is not likely to be attributed to diabetes.

More frequent urination at night as also thought to be because of reaching middle age when it is ofter diabetes.

High blood pressure and high cholesterol, even heart attacks are often not attributed to diabetes when that is often the cause.

Even being a bit forgetful is usually seen as a sign of age when actually it is a symptom of diabetes.

Maybe these days doctors are at least thinking about the cause as well as the symptom. Also the fact that routine testing is more frequent will give more frequent discovery and diagnosis.

There are 2 fundamental and parallel reasons. 1 Latinos now outnumber blacks - Latinos have a higher incidence of diabetes - and their population is increasing more rapidly than any other ethnic group. 2 Body Mass Index (weight in kg/height in meters squared) - the medical definition of obesity - is increasing rapidly. Increased BMI means increased incidence of diabetes. Indeed - the teenagers of today are projected to be the 1st generation in the US to live a shorter life than their parents.

Look at the correlation between average waist size in men or women in comparison to the rise of type II diabetes.

For Type II DM...Obesity, lack of restraint in eating, over-indulgence, lack of exercise. Too much food actually available, and much less physical activity needed in most of our occupations.

If you want to think about it, electronics, nintendo-type games, where all the action is on the TV set, computer games instead of actually playing them yourself.

Less NEED to walk anywhere.

Just food for thought and discussion.

To be very blunt, it's Gluttony . We are eating twice as much today, then our forefathers and mothers did, and they were working physically much harder.
